Ruby-Throated Hummingbird Houston, TX

F5, 70-300 zoom, 3 SB28 flashes, Sensia 100.

This was taken in my back yard a few years back. I have just a few shots of them as they back away from a feeder but even fewer with them looking right at you.

Looks like a Top Gun shot to me. :D

Great action, Alan. Of course the techs are all right on, as usual.

I'm thinking traffic cop. Either way, lovely. Think a certain magazine will break the mold and use it without the flowers and the fourth and fifth flashes?

Alan:

greta capture and action. I'm a bit curious what the blothcy background area is in upper right. From the scanning process of film perhaps?

The pose and unusal head-on angle are fantastic, but there's something funky going on in your BG - especially the upper right. 8)

cheers, Oliver

Alan:

The pose is to die for, but may need a little Gaussian Blur over the right upper side to get rid of the distracting grain.

Alan, it looks like Nureyev to me. Wonderful position. Why is the BG so grainy? Is this a significant crop?

Wow, what kind of aperture and flash settings do you use for this type of shot?

This is a really good shot. For their size and speed, they're among the most difficult to photographs, specially at close to full frame. Great Action!

Tony, the camera is set to manual at sync 1/250 & F16. The flashes are set to manual at 1/60 power at 75MM zoom and 14 inches from subject. it's a set up that I worked out and always gives me the exposure I want with iso 100 film.

The Bg is from my old minolta scanner. This is an old scan. I should have rescaned it with todays technology but didn't pay attention to the upper corner. Thanks.

This is one of the most unique hummer shots that I've seen. I absolutely love the "look" that you're getting. Outstanding.
