Juan Bahamon - Nature Photographer
I was trained as a neurologist, a profession that I still practice, but my real passion is to take artistic portraits of birds. To research a good subject, to scout the location where it lives, to learn his/her behavior then, I slowly, slowly approach close without disturbing or threatening, I observe the animal during different lighting conditions, I choose the lens that will give me a close encounter and wait and wait until the bird does something interesting or gives me a flattering profile, finally as a maniac, I take as many shots as possible and study them over and over until I am satisfied with a creative way to depict the bird.
Whether I am crawling in the mud, hiding in a hot blind, paddling a boat, hiking with my camera or standing on a deck or a shore for hours and hours, it gives me enormous pleasure to observe how nature has so many beautiful things to offer to our senses, only if we are willing to stop and wait for the gifts of seeing so many feathered beauties.
During my regular job as a neurologist, I am constantly confronted with so much pain, suffering and cripplesness that I need the balance of bird photography to enjoy beauty, normalcy and the peacefulness of nature.
I have received no formal education in photography nor in ornithology. However I practice, practice and practice and follow the teachings of Master Bird Photographers such as Arthur Morris, Charles Glatzer, EJ Peiker, and Greg Downing.
