Well, I finally got some decent images of Harlequin ducks. This male was really bobbing up and down in the water making framing and focus a challenge. The whites aren't over just featureless. Very tough bird to meter for sure.
EOS 1Ds, 500mm f/4 IS, 1.4XTC, ISO 200, f/11, 1/700 sec, ff with BB at -1.7Ev. In PS cropped, curves and USM.

Very well done, exposure looks OK to me. I would crop a bit from the top,

Posting images from the outing already...you are good! I assume this is from this morning, with the good light and the small group of Harlequins in front of you? Wish I had something nearly this nice!

So great to see you, Donna, and everyone else. Despite the cold I think it was a good weekend! :)

Thanks for the kind comments.
This was from Saturday afternoon. I haven't gotten to the images from this morning yet  This was from just beyond the concrete portion of the jetty. Fortunately, the rolling waves made this image look as if I were much lower than I was. It is tough to get down to eye level from the jetty without a wet-suit :)
It was a wonderful weekend despite the temps. and great to meet so many NSNers.

Wil, love the pose. Wish for a lower angle but understand the situation. I too would crop a bit off the top. Well done on the exposure.

Wil, beautiful! Please tell me that this was before I got there yesterday - it looked like they were in dark shadows when I arrived and almost impossible to shoot so I didn't bother with them.

All technicals are right on and this is really a sweet shot. The angle is a bit high but that was unavoidable.

Kelly,
This was taken on Saturday afternoon around 2 PM. There was a small flock that was right next to the jetty and they were in and out of the shadows.
Nice meeting you.

Very beautiful. Very good, as you have maintained detail in the dark areas.

As you said, the hardest part of getting a good shot of these guys is framing due to the constant up and down. You nailed him here!!!

Gorgeous shot....I'd love to just see one of these guys. It would have been great to be there this weekend but I don't think I could have braved the weather. Hope you got a lot more killer images!!!

I should have gotten an earlier start - I was pulling into the parking lot about 2:30, and it was a bit later when I got out to the end of the jetty.
