Handheld, pop up flash at -1/3, full frame

I came away from Homer with many better and more interesting images but no situation was as unique as this one. This was one of the afternoons when we shot from the beach at the end of the Spit instead of from the car. We were all getting close up shots of another very cooperative Juvi. I was kneeling next to the branch in the image, no more than three feet from him when another Juvi landed on the branch. I didn't know he was there until Greg called my name. When I looked up this Juvi was close enough to touch. We stared at each other for a while and then I crawled a few feet away so that I could get this full frame image at 100mm. Of all the close encounters during the last five days, this is the one that sticks with me the most. Thanks, EJ, Greg and Heather (and you too Tony). More to come (but you knew that :D )

Just reading your experience made me salivate. Great capture. Good technique for handheld.

Nice image, I wish I had concentrated on the juvi birds more because they are so beautiful. The 10D built-in flash works quite well, doesn't it? This is a great perch, too, much better than the upside down trees. I like the photo a lot.

Glad you had fun!

Very nice Neil! I was amazed at how tame these majestic birds are and one of the things that sticks out in my mind is the bird that landed on the hood of the car yesterday. :!: I recall you saying "how can I photograph this bird?" as you stared at it through the windshield. ;)

Nice image of this juvi and I'm looking forward to seeing many more from the trip. Thanks again Neil and glad you made it home safe. :D

100 mm? Unbelievable - I have to go. This is great! It's hard to imagine an environment where eagles behave like seagulls ( perching on a car - lol) Just can't-sleep amazing, I would think. Thank you for sharing the image and experience.

Although I didn't get an image of an eagle on the hood of my car, I did get a crow that way. :D There were quite a few times though that I thought I was going to lose my flash to an eagle hitting it as it was sticking a little over the top of the SUV.

I saw the bird land and I thought this one was going to land on Neil's lens. I'm glad it decided on a little more solid perch. :D

Nice image of the Juvi and I too am looking forward to more.

Great photo, Neil. There is nothing quite like the experience of being this close to these magnificent birds.

Thanks for sharing the image and the story. :D
