Canon 1D 70-200 IS L 2.8 Lens (at 70 mm) ISO 200 f2.8 at 1/1600 Fill Flash at -1 with BB. Hand Held. Arizona Desert Museum, Tucson.

At the ASDM I had a very good time photographing this barn owl, man the 70-200 2.8 it great when the light is not abundant, the morning was cloudy and overcast but helped to give a "dreamy" mood. Also Fill flash at -1 with BB assured a catchlight.

I hope you enjoy, thanks for looking, all comments appreciated.

Awesome timing. Love the feet. Would make a great vertical too.

Juan,
At first, I didn't like the negative space on the left, but the more I look, the more I like your composition here. Great catch of the moment. Very nice.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, "awesome timing" was the first thought that went across my mind! Way to go JB! Way to go!

This would make a killer 8x10 vertical. However, I like the composition as is, after looking at it for a while. I can see the owl swooping low and then coming up at the end to land. Super job.

This is an incredible shot......love the action. Funny how so many of us first thought "vertical" and then have decided that this works very well.

Wonderful action, Juan. The head and talons are sharp. I'd eliminate space on the left and end up with a squarish format. Well done.

Great action shot, Juan. I think the space on the left allows the viewer to "fill in" the flight of the bird. I like it a lot.

Wonderful Hooter about to land!!

Image:
Juan, Excellent timing, those neurons are firing att the exact nano second in turn pressing the shutter micro seconds later !! For some reason I like the composition as is, giving the bird space to fly from outside of the frame to the perch on the right, his outstretch legs and talons are just wonderful, a very typical landing for an owl, the same technique is used when landing on prey, Nice exposure befitting an Owl's habitat and excellent fill-flash!!, Killer image in my little book!!! Congrats!!8)

Juan,
Your owls shots are very special. I was there last year and this past weekend. On both occasions I had sunlight, and they fly this bird so that you have to shoot into the sun or almost so. Getting photos is difficult, particularly when you are arm to arm with a number of observers. You've done a fine job and are shaming me into going back for another try.

Joseph:

Do not feel bad about your skills. I had the same problem, but I spoke to Sue, the director of the Raptor program. If you pay $60.oo they will arrange a private show just for you. They allow you 15 minutes to photograph the owl, you can position well regarding the sun and also fly the owl back and forth 4 times.

Sorry I "forgot" to mention this piece of information in my original post.

Juan, It;s good to know that they limit this photographic exercise to just fifteen minutes and only four flight, depending on distance and the weather Owls can and do overheat very easily, they are ambush hunters unlike a Peregrine, they don't have the stamina, muscles, wing feathers like the interceptors, seems to me that they know what they are doing !!
I hope the Owl is getting Roasted Mice for her extra work!!!

A vertical crop would also be nice.
