Smew

EOS300D, Sigma 100-300 F4 + 1.4TC, ISO400, 1/1200 @ F8, 550EX + BB

These little guys are so cute and move like little darts through the water. They are also not afraid to stand up for themselves when other species come too close!!

Gorgeous shot of a gorgeous duck. Where were you that you got this close to one? The water is lovely too. Excellent work.

Thanks Wil. There are one or two places where these can be found not too far away from us, but this particular one was at the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge, over on the West side of UK near Bristol on the River Severn Estuary. They have a wonderful place with various lakes, ponds, wetlands and marshes where many birds fly in to over Winter, as well as a variety of species both captive and wild that can be found on the various areas. We have only been there once, but will certainly be going again as soon as possible. You can see all sorts of waterfowl from large flocks of Bewick, Mute and Trumpeter Swans and various flocks of Geese - (some of the individual Swans have been recorded as coming in for the Winter for some 27 years!) right down to little species like these Smew.

It is a wonderful place. :)

I love it. The feathery texture in the BG water is terrific.

Nice shot Carol. The steely water really compliments the colors of the smew quite nicely!

Carol,

This is great!!

I saw a couple of these at out local zoo year before last and I'm still wanting to go back and get a shot of them. I'll be happy with one that's half as nice as this. :D

Very nice. I think I've only seen these in field guides. Awesome job on the exposure, Carol. This is definitely a keeper.

And a sweet shot of a sweet morsel as well. Just beautiful! And that water is something else....as if it was made for just for this little guy.
