Harlequin Duck - Barnegat, New Jersey, USA
EOS 10D, 600mm, 1/1250, f/8, ISO 200

Just got back late tonight from the small island village of Barnegat, NJ deep inside the Arctic Circle  In all seriousness it was dangerously cold but we survived. I got this uncropped headshot as my very last photo this morning before having to return home. The composition is a little non-conventional - these guys move in the ocean swells a lot but I liked it with the outstretched neck. I prepared this on a laptop on the flight home so hopefully it will look OK.

Very nice, E.J. The 10D strikes again. It really shows off the fine plumage on these guys. Of course, I've only seen them through the photos here and on the other site.

I saw the other side of this bird's head, with its shadows... :D Nicely done! I like the unconventional shot, and the colors are great.

I hope the trip was a productive one for you!

You're quickly knocking out that list of North American species you didn't have, aren't you? :)

This is awesome! I love the stretched out neck and the little details. Those feathers look silky smooth.

All that's left is King Eider, Steller's Eider, and Spectacled Eider. And my Mottled Duck images are nothing to write home about :(

Nice shot E.J.,
As much as I like Barnegat, I don't envy you guys being on that jetty on Saturday  ! That place is cold on a warm day. Your willingness to suffer for the shot paid off.

This is very niche, but it seems very dark on my screen. Not sure if this due to the lap top...

Hat's off to you for braving the cold.

Great shot. I know you guys out on the end of the jetty earned anything you got. I was great meeting you and seeing some of your images at dinner Saturday night. I only live a couple of hours from Barnegat and will return the next time we get a weather forcast of wind chills above
-25 degrees. I still don't know how you guys crossed those ice covered rocks with all your gear. Enjoy the Arizona sunshine.
