This shot is of one of the Adults from a nesting pair of White-tailed Kites this past Spring. All of the local Bolsa Chica photographers enjoyed the opportunities this presented but were also respectful of keeping distance. Two chicks were successfully fledged. I was extremely saddened to receive an email from Vince Thomas, that the land owner of that portion of the Upper Mesa opted to cut down the tree that they nested in   , against Coastal Commission direction. It appears that all trees in that area will ultimately go. At least one adult is still in the area, and hopefully he/she will pair again in a new local location.

Sadly the "progress" and "restoration" of Bolsa Chica does not appear to be in the best interest of the native inhabitants or nature photographers!

Thanks for viewing and comments
- Larry

Larry, that's a beauty of a shot. The whites are right on, and I love the eye and talons among the excellent detail over all. Sad to hear about the trees being cut down in the area of their nest...

Very nice shot, Larry.
The wing, tail and feet positions could not be better. I like the 3/4 angle to the camera too.

Larry this is a beautiful shot--the wing position and open talons are fantastic! :) :)

The fact they cut down that tree against the CC directive really is sickening.

Wonderful image, great control of the whites & flight pose.

Why are all the trees in the area to go ?

Beautiful image Larry... love the "dangling talons", I don't have a comparable image... I'm jealous!!! The Coastal Commission issued a "Cease and Desist" order the day they started cutting down the trees, so at present only two have been removed. However, the first tree to go was the kite's nesting tree and I'm sure it was intentional... since a tree used for nesting by an endangered species could foul up their future development plans!!!!!!!!!

Spectaculat shot !!!!! :) Very sorry to hear about the cutting of the trees, is it do to a new development? Which reminds me that: "There is nothing in which the birds differ more from man than the way in which they can build and yet leave a landscape as it was before." Said by Robert Lynd

Great shot, matched only by the sadness of the story.

The colors, the eye and the detail here are outstanding. A dramatic photo.

The way you handled the whites and darks, wings up, claws open, way over the top!

Fantastic Larry, as for the trees, they're just idiots with no view of the future or consequences of their mindless actions...
