Here's yet another northern Minnesota great grey owl taken a couple of weeks ago. This owl was content to sit on this perch for a very long time with little concern with the folks with cameras or binoculars. It kept looking down in the snow all around and we were hoping for some lunch shots but may be next time!

Taken with a Canon 10D, 500mm 4.5 @f5.6

Thanks for looking

Love this view from behind. You can even just make out the fuzzy edges of the wing feathers that make these guys such silent flyers. Very cool stuff.

Very, very nice Scott. Beautifully isolated from the BG and a very nice solitary feeling to it.

Scott

Very nice. Look at how much the feathers are frayed on its tail.

Thanks for the comments all.

The full resolution image of this owl shows some reddish in the white feathers below the beak and above its right eye. Don't they eat their food whole without tearing it apart like other raptors? I watched one swallow a vole or mouse whole late in the day but did not get to see any other eating behavior. Do you folks feel this could be the results of a messy meal or maybe an injury?

I'll be heading back up this weekend - looks like some more snow is in order!

Scott

I'm told that they do swallow whole till they are almost full, then they tear the prey for more feasting.

Great BG, perch and pose, Scott - just wish for a tad more room on this one (minor nit thought). Well done.

Awesome shot Scott. Would like a bit more room all around, but could go either way!

Today I got a shot of GGO with some blood on the beak. A few minutes before I took the capture, the owl caught a vole, hit it 3 or 4 times and then swallowed…
