Harris's Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus)

I know there are more dynamic Harris's Hawk images out there, but honestly, how many have been photographed in the middle of a city of 4 million people. This is one of 2 Harris's Hawks I have located near downtown Houston, TX. The other is an immature that I haven't seen in a couple of months. He/She shows up at this tree daily at the time of day to scout the pigeon population. Yesterday, it gave Alan Murphy and I a treat and flew in twice.

Canon 20D; 500mm + 2x TC; tripod Manual Focus
ISO: 400
Manual Meter for 1/800 sec, f/8
4x5 crop from vertical; almost full frame.

This is exceptional in my opinion -- excellent exposure, love the angle and the DOF is perfect.

Wayne, ya gotta love these urban birds. This is a great shot of a beautiful bird. They can adapt to live among us seemingly more easily than we can with them. I would love to get more raptor opportunities here at my house. I only get a few each year and I am almost never ready when they occur.

After you did all the work in scouting the bird, I felt like an Irish Beggar, just showing up and there he was. :)

A great shot Wayne. Did you do a shadow recovery to see if more detail can come out of the dark side?

Wayne, I think this is an excellent photo of a Harris's Hawk. Hope you and Alan get many more quality images.

I tried a few different S/H settings to bring out more detail in the dark area, but it looked unnatural, so I didn't push it. I may try dodging the breast and tail just a bit for printing.

Wayne:

The posture is priceless with a very "Hawkish" look. I see the light was harsh, so good job with the exposure, maybe fill flash next time. Sincere congratulations.
