After shooting lots of perched Kestrals at Bosque it occurred to me to try and shoot them as they left their perch. They usually don't stay perched very long so it doesn't take long to get a chance at them in flight.

Richard:

I like this a lot, for one thing is different of the classical perched bird, second the sky is very nice, the eye contact is precious, my only suggestion if any is to selectively saturate the bird so it will match better with the saturated sky, the background twigs do not bother me at all, it gives depth to the image for a 3-D flavor, congratulations in previsualizing the image.

 Excellent, Richard. Do kestrels typically give some body language warning before they're about to take flight, or do you have reflexes like a cat?

Excellent - These are hard to get if they are anything like red tails taking off. Nice work.

Peter,
Not only don't they give you any indication of when they are going to take off, but sometimes they dive straight to the ground, sometimes they lift off in an upward direction, right, left etc. I'll post a few of the shots in the photo essay forum and you can see them going every direction.

Very well done, Richard. Very nice departure from the usual perched shot.

Nice timing... the fact that he's still clutching the perch makes it better for me. Light's nice, too.

Nice one Richard, these birds seldom leave the branch in a direction towards the photographer. Well done!
