Redtail Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)

Shot this afternoon, in Houston. I am not crazy about the angles of the perch, but it looks better with the angled trunk on the left than without it. This was a most cooperative subject, as it stayed around long enough to grab about 30 frames in late afternoon light. This is my favorite out of the bunch. Thanks for looking.

Canon 20D; 500mm IS (on); 2X TC; tripod & wimberley (locked down)
ISO 400
Stopped down an extra stop for 1/500 @ f/11
Manual focus

Very nice image, Wayne. Your long lens technique looks great and the hawk did a nice job of posing for you.

Awesome Wayne. Your pulling all kinds of stuff out of that park, great job. I would be tempted to clone out the left branch, but that's just me.

Here is the cloned version. Not too bad I guess.

Wayne:

I love the second version, has nothing distracting the viewer from the bird, I would saturate a little more the red of the tongue just to give a little bit more of punch. Congratulations. The look is ver "hawkish".

The repost is way better IMO. But for printing i'd be more careful w/ the clone job, in the repost the bottom of the perch is "trasparent", from being touched w/ the clone tool. Just use a smaller radius and you should be set. I love the open beak and the ruffled head feathers Wayne. Great shot.

Good catch by Chris. Also, I often find that the clone tool eliminates the texture in blue sky, giving a different look. After cloning is complete, I now like to select the sky and then used the Healing Brush (lasrge) over the cloned area, which restores the texture.

Another possibility here would be to crop the left edge of the original image just enough to eliminate the little patch of blue in the LL corner.

Hi Brian, Actually the whites are well inside the hot mark. At 100%, there's plenty of detail in the white plumage.

Great shot Wayne, I can't really tell which image is better, but perhaps the origional would look better if a little was taken off the left hand side? With that said,,, I think they both work very well!

Happy Holidays!

Nice shot Wayne. I like the implied action with the open beak. (Sorry but I can still see a vertical line to the left of the perch where the cloning was done.... just a hair different shade of blue)

Don't apologize for my lack of attention to detail, Jim. Because of your post, it's now fixed and perfect. Thanks for looking.
