Most times an o-o-f bird or animal in the background is a distraction, but in rare instances, they can, with careful placement, be a plus. Here, I needed to put the 'sharp" impala in the l-r-c (using One-Shot AF) to be able to pleasingly include all of the second animal. I call these type of photos "juxtaposition images."

Impalas, Samburu National Park, Kenya. Canon EOS 1D
Mark II with 500mm f/4L IS lens. ISO 250. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop: 1/640 sec. at f/4.

All comments welcome. Best and love to all, artie

Unusual composition but very nicely seen. Beautiful impala in the foreground is nicely complemented by the "cave painting." Have you considered cropping the top a bit to eliminate the darkest parts of the branch? (I'm presuming that you're just back and have had a great trip?)

Very cool shot Arthur. I agree with Richs crop suggestion. I look forward to seeing more images from your trip.

Excellent idea well executed. I wish the background kept the same colours all the way up, would make the cave painting imagery stronger.

Artie, I really like the "cave painting" effect in this one and the look of the in-focus Impala. Looks like you hauled both your 500 & 600 to Africa.

Great idea, but I find the dark area at the top a distraction. I agree with the suggestion of a crop, but unfortunately to get rid of the said area means losing some of the BG Impala horns and spoiling the theme. :?

I love the colour tones and the FG subject. 8) 8) 8) :)

Thanks to all who commented. Though I could crop away most of the darker area at the top (while leaving the second animal intact with room to spare), I like the darker area as a frame. Plus, the tangled o-o-f branches add to the cave painting effect.
Best, artie

Interesting idea and concept, Artie. I would have preferred to see a tad bit more of the foreground bachelor. $.02.

It's a tough call but I think I'd go for a bit off the top. Very nice shot as is though of course.

I think I like it more cropping the dark area directly over the OOF horns. This still leaves lots of trees on the right for effect.

Very 'artful' shot.

Alternatively, I like this with the entire bright area at the top cropped off. I think it simplifies the comp a bit and still maintains the cave painting background. Either way, I like it.

well lots of thoughts on the end result as presented and crop suggestions... :)

what I like about this is how the image was seen, instantly composed, light balanced and shot....after all I am sure that the Impalas didn't stand there in this formation for more than a few seconds. I only wish that I can work my equipment as smoothly, quickly and acurately exsposed as Artie has here.

Well seen and good capture.

Artie, this image rocks.

Way to see an image. A wall hanger for sure.

Best and welcome back.
