Hi,

This is my first post. It is also my first visit to this site. I'm really looking forward to looking and learning from this site.

This is an image taken when I was in Tanzania the first two weeks of this year. This was in Serengeti National Park. The mother lion has been cropped out. She was on the left and added an awkwardness to the shot. I'm not clear on how to ask for feedback on two pictures at the same time so I picked the one I liked best.

One question: Is the sharpen/unsharp mask too much? I think I tend to over do it sometimes.

Specs: 1Ds, 500mmIS, f/7.1 1/60, no flash, roughly 50% of the horzontal frame.
Thank you very much,
Perry Smith

Let me be the first to welcome you to the forum. You did a great job of posting your picture and it is very helpful for everyone when you talk about what you did and ask specific questions like the sharpening question.

The picture is terrific. Were you traveling with Andy, because I saw something like this on his slide show? The four babies in a row make for a very cute photo. The sharpening looks appropriate to my eye for the web.

Thanks again for posting and welcome aboard.

DKO

PS If you have other pictures, you just wait the 24 hr period and post again!

Thanks for the welcome... It is amazing how "scary" this is to me.

I was on the same trip with Andy. We both live in Austin and connected up via Michael's web site.
Thank you very much,
Perry Smith

Oh great. Now I have competition!!

I suspect you could set your black point to be a little closer in, thus increasin contrast a tad. I like your angle to the cubs, as mine was dead straight on, and some of my shots look staged.

Perry, A great big warm welcome to NatureScapes.Net. :D

This is a wonderful first post and one to be mighty proud of. It has big-time cuteness factor and the looks on the faces are priceless! I agree that a slight boost in contrast would make it even better and would also consider a crop from the top just below the bright leaf at the center top edge. Still excellent as presented.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post and I'm looking forward to many more!

Hi, Perry, welcome to NatureScapes.Net! A terrific first post! The "cuteness factor" of these cubs is incredible.

You are asking about unsharpen mask (USM) - I have a pretty sensitive monitor and cannot see any artifacts. Seems to be right on to me!

Looking forward to more posts!

You can't go wrong with lion cubs for cuteness. You captured them very well.

The possible improvements to the shot have already been mentioned, so I'll just welcome you to NSN and keep 'em coming. :)

Thank you all for the replies. I feel warmly welcomed. This post and web site has been a very great experience.

I'll play with the contrast. One thought is that the cuteness needs a soft touch but I may have it too soft. And the leaf in the center I didn't notice but I appriciate that comment as well.

Thank you again

I hope to post two more pics tonight...
Thank you very much,
Perry Smith

Nice shot - the cubs look undisturbed and relaxed. One way of increasing the contrast is to add another round of usm after sharpening using values in the range Amount = 20 to 40 percent (typically 30); Radius 30-60 (typically 40); Threshold = 0. This removes the "digital haze" from the image and increases contrast. It does not work so well if the subject has a lot of lighter tones.

Welcome of NSN.

Best wishes
