Bosque del Apache NWR

Photographed on the back side of Marsh Loop the morning we decided to pass on the sandhill blast off. This hawk really surprised us as it stayed in this spot for 20 minutes or longer as we approached, changed lenses and even moved around for different angles. As more people stopped and stepped out of their cars to take their own pictures, this guy just sat and watched all the cameras clicking away at it. I think it finally flew away out of shear boredom.

We have had some discussion as to what type of hawk this is. I thought it was a red-tail (but then I think every hawk is a red-tail :( ) but others felt it may be a merlin. If anyone knows for certain, or just wants to add their best guess, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

The face is throwing me -- otherwise I would say this is a red-tail.

Nice image, the colors do appear a bit washed out though on my monitor.

Juvenile Red-Tail. The shape is a buteo, not a falcon. The prominent belly band is present - a merlin would have streaks on the entire chest to neck area. A merlin would also be much smaller.

Brett, it's a nice shot that would have a better comp if you took some space off the right and put it on the left for the bird to look into.

A little tight to the left side. Nice otherwise. Definitely Red-tailed Hawk.

Yup, juvenile Redtail. Well done getting this there. I only found one that I could shoot this year and it was too far away.

Agree with needing more space to the left and less on the right but like this a lot otherwise!!! :D
