Not sure on the plumage...these guys go through so many phases....

Shot under overcast lighting conditions; and yes, I shot this Gigo style in the sand... :P

Another thing I learned this past year is patience. Focus on a subject for a while and be ready for behavior shots....

EOS 20D w/70-200 2.8L USM IS
f/4; 1/800; ISO 400; no exp. comp.
580Ex with Adorama Strobe Sock diffuser (provides a -1Ev to flash output)

converted using Adobe Raw 2.4 beta; sharpened using intellisharpen; processed in photoshop cs.

Pete:

Very well exposed and sharp, I might have wanted even a lower angle to homogenize the background, I like the action with the object in his mouth.

beautiful exposure and good use of flash !!!! and great behaviour shot !

patience does pay ;-) and i liked the 'gigo style' touch hehehe -

the lower you get, the further away the 'back'-ground becomes, hence a better blur :)

watch out for lines !

watch out for dark and light elements in the background - like you got in upper right corner ! - also expecially crashing waves in the sun ! those can be painful !

Actually, I was curious as to how he got back in the car after crawling in muck at estero?

Great image Mike. I would crop to below the dark band across the top.
