Interesting shot, Jimmy. I remember seeing a White winged Scoter with the same problem and the same strange pinkish color. You've caught the chestnut in the neck and the blue-green sheen of the cap very well.

Nicely done!!

Jimmy, that's not a defective bill, that's a Duck giving you the rasberry :)
Sweet light.

This makes me so sad. Can birds make it on their own with a defective/broken bill? I'm glad you took the photo. I've missed a few such opportunities because I had a hard time emotionally, now I just try to overcome it and get the shot - I can always erase it later if I want to.

It's a wonderful image - the light, details, the colors...just wish the bird was 100% healthy. :(

I've seen more than a few birds with a missing or broken mandible, such as this one. Very sad to see. Nice shot of a tough guy. :(

I'm with Greg on this one. It's a wonderful shot.....and a lesson in the hardships that birds endure.

A beautiful image but tough to take emotionally. :(

Great capture even if dramatic and on the sad side of the street, The life of birds is hard by itself, without hunters, pesticides and perennial loss of habitat, I only wish they were smart enough to move into National Parks and Preserves, but then again, not being able to migrate and to nest, life won't be worth living even for them!!!
