White Pelican - Huntington Beach, California, USA
EOS 10D, 600mm, 1/320, f/10, ISO 200

A shot I took last Monday morning in Southern California. I wish for more of a head turn and a faster shutter speed - this was a grab shot and the camera was set for shooting this guy sitting still in the water when suddenly he took off. I would have probably gone with a higher shutter speed set-up if I had planned on flight shooting but I still think its a pretty cool shot.

I like it without the head turn. It just makes the bird look stiffer, and almost comically self-conscious. You captured the essence of these birds, which is one part graceful, two parts goofy.

A fine capture, EJ!
Love the taking off pose and the water spray created by the feet ...

Beautiful shot, love the action on the legs and the water splashing. We just had 800+ of these guys at Lake Hollingsworth. I manage to get some shots I'll post later.

Nice capture! I find Pelicans in flight a particular challenge with fixed focal length because it doesn't take too long before I start cutting off wingtips. I like the motion blur, and it's sharp everywhere it needs to be. Great!

I like the blur as it gives a take-off effect. Good grab at and excellent focus at 1/320

This is great. The slight head turn would have been nice but the comp. and action more then make up for it. The slower shutter speed doesn't bother me, I like the look of the water coming off of his feet.

A really cool shot. I really like the water being kicked up from behind...certainly adds to the action. Good job!

I agree, it is a cool shot! Love the flexing feathers at the wingtips and the water spray off the feet.
