I was lucky to have a pair of these around this year but they proved to be the most difficult backyard birds to shoot. It was easy enough to get them to feed on oranges but they quickly learned to come from high up in the trees straight to the orange feeders. Here is one of a few successful frames i got.

Canon 10d, 400mm 2.8IS, 2XII, ISO400, 1/500 sec, f8, cropped from horizontal.

I have corrected the subject name from Northern Oriole to Baltimore Oriole, Icterus galbula, per E.J.'s correct information. If it changes again please let me know. :? Yes I use Sibley's, but I guess I hadn't kept up on this one.

Steve,

Sweet Image! The perch is nice but a little big for the bird. The color and pose are wonderful, love the slightly open beak and clean background. Very nice!

Unless its changed again recently, I think these went back to being called Baltimore Orioles. Whatever the name, its a very very nice photo.

Steve, the perch may be big, but the clean BG and open bill are great.

A very nice image. I have never had them in my backyard so you are certainly lucky. The perch really doesn't bother me as I'm attracted to the colorful bird.

Very sweet! There are some tricks to get them to work their way to the oranges. Using a long branch, leaning it on and angle and mounting the orange at the bottom can sometimes convince them to climb down the perch. Getting them to pause is another story. You can also put the orange right up in the tree and prune all the branches but one for the bird to work its way out on.

Anyway, this is very nicely done and I am envious that you have these in your back yard. Living near Baltimore you would think there would be more around

Northern or Baltimore, it's very nice and the singing pose puts it over the top.

Just love this. Yellows appear almost as a water color painting. Might try a little more selective USM but not even too convinced that would improve the image, I would just try it out and see.
