Clark's Grebe, Bolsa Chica CA 10/30/2005
Canon 20D, 300 f/2.8 with 2xTC, ISO 200, f/11, 1/500th, natural light

New species for me so I was excited and the best morning at Bolsa Chica in what seems like forever. I had earlier assumed it was a Western grebe, but was quickly and Thankfully corrected! Almost a pristine reflection, but difficult to come by as this guy has huge feet and was constantly doing subtle position corrections. The movements are not enough to cause a ripple but enough to diffract the reflection.

Thanks for looking and comments
- Larry

What a beautiful shot. I think the reflection is interesting as the ripple in the water makes it look like the bill is open while the primary image has the bill closed.

Gorgeous and perfect. I like the reflection to show the water, and think this is just right. A wonderful experience for you, and a great photo.

Gorgeous shot! The birds position with the head just a bit farther away than the tail makes it look like it needs some rotation but the eyes line up perfectly so it it's level. A beautiful image!

Thanks Alan,

I took a lot of shots of this scene. Many with the grebe parallel to the sensor plane, but I did not like them as much. With the slightly away pose and a head turn back the neck line is just so much more interesting. I always check my reflection shots for being lined up - One of the great tips I learned here! :D The shot itself was a little off and corrected during raw conversion in C1.

Larry, I can feel your excitement but you kept a steady trigger finger. :) Gorgeous shot of this Clark's, you really hit it. Placid water, sweet light, and perfect exposure. I agree with E.J. on the apparent open bill in the reflection -- that's a great little detail! Makes me think the bird is talking to itself as it cruises... Great image!

Another shot from the "k contingent!". Sorry, I couldn't help myself. This rocks Larry. Are Clark's rare at Bolsa?
