Getting this type of shot on a ground background is hit or miss. Many times the camera cannot distinguish between the bird and the background but this time it did. A dark cloudy day so I upped the iso to 1000 to obtain max shutter speed.

Canon 1DII, 500f4, ISO 1000, 1/1600 sec, f4, eval +2/3

Great pose and I like that little bit of head turn to make eye contact with you. Looks very clean for 1000.

Gorgeous image of this kestrel, you really called it. From the pose and the glance, the little raptor seems to be just loafing along but I'm sure it was anything but (wing blur at 1/1600s -- the bird is moving!). Great post...

Wow! Terrific shot. Hard to believe there is so much wing movement at that shutter speed. Sharpness at ISO 1000 is wonderful.

Terrific shot, Rob; when I try this it's almost always "miss".

Very nice. Did you use any noise reduction software on this. I've never shot at this high an ISO, but I would have assumed it would be noisier

Richard, I did use neat image on the background. The bird was untouched.

Great shot, Rob. I might find some nits with a part of the BG but what's the point? The kestrel is too good to bother. :)
