Canon 1DS Mark II 600 IS Lens 2XTC 1/250 at f8 ISO 400 BB -1 1/3 Manual Incident -1/3, J Bar Ranch, Alice Texas.

Last year by this time I have found a couple of Vermilion Flycatcher nesting by the corral next to a big tank of water, during the time of the Wild Life Photo Contest, I was looking so hard for those guys without avail. This year I went back and sure enough there were two males in full adult colors, the females were not around, I was hoping to catch some of the acrobatic mating displays of the males but they did not occur, I have to settle for a boring bird-on-a-stick type of picture. Maybe next time....

All brutal comments are appreciated, thanks for looking.

I for one will take this "boring bird on a stick" any day. :) These little guys can be surprisingly hard to expose well, the red plumage is so reflective it just lights up! You got it bang on here, with a nice clean composition. And impressive detail for 1200mm!

This is a beautiful shot, well exposed capturing the reds and blacks well. Great bg too.

You said to be brutal. Am I wrong to think the focus is in the foreground? The perch in the lower lhc is in focus however the perch behind the bird along with the tail is not. Very minor nit. Wish it were mine.

That's a very well done "bird on a stick" Juan. Sharp where it counts, great color, & a complimentary bg.

Yes, a boring "bird on a stick". Well, it's a nice BOS. A perch with some foliage would be a great to one-up this one next time, Juan.

Ofer:

It is abour ~ 50% crop. It is a little bit noisy because when I converted I have to take away a little of exposure since is so easy to blow the saturated reds, I will give a pass with Noise Ninja. Thanks for commenting.

he's a beauty! How could you go wrong with him in any shot. A little more depth of field to get the tail and perch more in focus and little more texture in the backround would have been nice. Got any more of these?

I found one in the Palm Desert area in April, and I am looking forward to trying to photograph him again next year. What a beautiful bird! I'd take this anytime.

What a stunning bird! If it were mine, I'd probably clone out the piece of stick that's sticking out in the back. This is beautiful Juan!

Beautiful pose and nice exposure, agree the focus may be a little forward but a lovely image.

Could be a boring stick but killer bg and bird !!! Love the image Juan !!! The only thing that bothers me a bit is the proximity of the beak to the knot ? Big Congrats !!! :)
