Motif: spruce grouse in spruce

This image has been my most popular one for publication. While the spruce grouse is perhaps common in Alaska and Canada, it's certainly rare in the northwoods of the northeast where I live.

I do consider it one of my favorites, recalling the excitement of seeing the bird in an Adirondack muddy bog and nervously handholding the 100-400 lens. I try not to recall however, the massive swarm of June blackflies that enveloped me as I looked through the viewfinder.

Taken using the Canon 10D, Canon 100-400, and Canon 420 EX with flash extender, mounted on the camera. I recall leaning against a tree to help steady myself.
