Well I posted a Great Gray peeking back at me so I thought I'd post this Northern Hawk Owl doing so. One of my favorites from my trip. I was bummed that he landed with that branch in the way till we squeaked and he leaned forward and bent around and looked around it back at us! The bright red background is Red Twig Dogwood that grows in lots of the open fields there. Makes for a very beautiful background.

Jim

This is really nice as usual.

This background looks very similar to another hawk owl image I saw recently - I think it was something Brian Small took. Was the perch preset with the background in mind? I ask because having been up there quite a bit recently I can't think of huge numbers of places with dogwoods since the majority of that area is Tamarack and Black Spruce. Spending 12 hours there this past weekend we were hard pressed to find anything other than birch, tamarack, black spruce or open sky for backgrounds.

Regards,

Terry

Hi Terry,
Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately my time there didn't overlap with Brian Smalls but as far as the perch goes... yup, I stuck this perch up along the edge of an open field just as I do for sparrows in open grassland in the spring ..... "If you build it they will come" :D

As far as the amount of dogwood goes..... I've never seen so much of it.... at least compared to where I'm from. Wish we had more here in New England.

Sweet shot, Jim! I would die for a background like this. All we have is snow, grass stems, more snow and more grass stems. At least we have a hawk owl :D

That's dogwood? I had assumed it was a barn in the background.

I love the posture with the bird looking out from behind the one branch.
