I tracked the bird from a distance, depressing the shutter when it banked to the light source.

* Photo Tip- since no horizon was involved I was able to orient the camera accordingly to include the entire subject as it began to fill the viewfinder.

1D, 300 f/2.8IS w/ 1.4, handheld
exposure - incident minus 2/3, 1/1250 @ F/5.6, ISO 200

Best and see you in the field,

Incredible detail and sharpness. Your post processing skills sing on this one. I like the cool tones in this all except for the eye.

Wonderful pose but the Osprey seems a bit dark. Why aren't the feathers more brown?

Mike, I made the same comment about the eye when I viewed the close-up image at the workshop. Does this change later in the nesting season?

Best,

Adults that I have seen always have a bright yellow eye and do not change throughout the year. Juveniles have a red or orange iris color and later change to yellow as they mature. I confirmed this checking my Peterson field guide on Hawks.

Wonderfull image. I don't find it too dark, i think the detail is great in the feathers. The image seems to have an overall cool tone.

Mike, this is how they have always appeared in years past. Here is a cropped head shot showing the dull eye, it was taken with a 600 and stacked converters only minutes after it landed atop the nest. Of course I could punch the eye color up and add saturation, etc in PS, but that is not how the bird appeared. The images do appear slightly cool as posted, but even adding an 81 in PS does little to bring out the color in the dull eye.

Hmmm?

Very interesting seeing this. You've got me scratching my head here and I'm going to go look at my Osprey images. Maybe others will do the same and we can see if this really is as abnormal as it appears. the closeup you posted really has a dull eye. Thanks Chas.

You got a lot of depth of Focus for shooting this F5.6. Excellent single shot. I would have gotten about 20 of it coming in and I probably would have missed this one.

Chas nice osprey image but the colors look way off don't know why because your colors are usually spot on.

One must keep in mind that during nesting season the yellow go out of their eyes and into the egg yokes, they need to put all the vitamins into the egg, otherwise no Kids!!! Hope this helps!!!

Great shot! Good tip too. Alex may be onto something regarding the eye color....... or Alex could just be on something??

Excellent shot Chas! Witht he 1D MK II in your hands you'll be even more lethal!

FYI I believe the lighter yellow in the eye is perhaps from an older bird but I believe also that there are varying levels of intensity during the mating season.

Heck!!, I'll buy that explanation!!!
No wonder my eyes glow green at night during the mating season as well
The problem is my mating season is 365 days long!!! and that is without taking a thing!!!
