In one short stretch of the 9 1/2-mile long paved driveway on this South Texas ranch, there would sometimes be 10 to 20 White-tailed Kites perched 40 yards north of the road at daybreak, sometimes as many as six in one small tree. I have no idea why this one area (and no other) interested them so much, though no doubt they were migrating through in numbers, and clearly they were hunting. None that I know of stayed to nest. I was never able to get close, so this shot on a foggy morning (my first of more than 100 mornings there) ended up being my favorite WTKI on the ranch, though it doesn't compete with what I had gotten before on another property. EOS-3, 600 f4L, setup and exposure unrecorded, Provia F at 200 and pushed one stop, Wimberly head on Kirk window mount, full frame.

Nice moody shot Cliff, I love these guys!

Just curious, what does "for discussion only" mean?

Jim,

As I understand NSN's rules, it means the image is not to be included in the weekly competitions, and therefore may not be archived on the site after the expiration of the normal hosting period.

Excellent, moody shot. The fog and lowered heads of the Kites work really well together.

Cliff, this is sweet. I'm also seeing a crop without the right bird too. Love the fog in this shot.

This shot DOES have a great feel to it Cliff, and I love the way they're all looking down at something. Nice one! 8) :)

Thanks for the clarification guys. As far as downloading, reworking and reposting goes, I thought that was by specific permission without any further clarification. Is this correct?

It is amazing how in the clear the birds are with all those interesting branches. The positions of the two high Kites in the frames makes for very dynamic diagonal lines down to the lower Kite; this is quuite engrossing for the eye.
