White Ibis
Estero Lagoon, Florida

Thinking of spring I am reflecting back on my first extend photo trip with Greg, which was Florida last March. The White Ibis was one of the first birds I saw that was totally new to me, and although I took many photos of them throughout the trip I never really thought I had gotten anything that good. Looking back over my files today this one appealed to me because of the curves in the neck and the surrounding greenery.

I am finding it increasingly difficult to process my old D1 digital images, as processing my 1D images is now so routine. I checked the whites carefully and tried to balance out any color casts and hopefully have done so. Comments in this regard appreciated.

Digital capture with Nikon D1
Sigma 300mm f/2.8 with 1.4x teleconverter
Manually exposed at 1/1250, f/5.6
ISO 200
Tripod with Wimberley Sidekick

Image comments/critiques appreciated!

Looks like you worked out the problems. The image is very nice. I like the composition, exposure, focus and BG.

The whites look white and the greys look clean.

I guess that's a long winded way of saying I like the image and have no nits.

A most patriotic ibis - red, white and blue (eye)! No arguments with the processing from this corner! Whites look good and green background makes it pop.

And I had a great time on that trip too! Sorry to miss you guys this year.

Sampling the whites, I tried so hard to work out the green and blue that I figured, if anything, I may have pushed it to a touch magenta. The only place where I really picked it up was the breast and underside of the bird, though. Guess I can't get anything by y'all. :)

This is an excellent shot in all regards!

I picked up some magenta too, but only on the underside. Good thing you are shooting the right brand of camera now. (HA!) ;) Seriously, I think it's a white balance issue as the underside is in a different temperature of light than the top side, which is crisp white. Flash would help even that out and balance the color temp a bit.

Nice shot, Heather. Not quite full breeding colors, but almost. I agree with a slight maganta cast on the darker whites.

Me, too!

Ironically, I haven't shot that location -- yet -- but my brother lives there (next to the Holiday Inn).

I know that bird! Great shot Heather I like the background a lot most Ibises are not photograph on grass and it works extremely well. Was he on the back of the Condos? Will check him out in a couple of weeks.

Heather:

A little touch of magenta cast but otherwise an awsome image. Very well saturated and pretty.

Close to perfection?

Great pose, position, color, background, and low angle.
