American Coot (Fulica americana)

Well, if you call a salad 'prey'. I don't know if this grass tasted that good or if the Coot was just really hungry, but he was slinging this stuff all over the place while he was eating. I would like a slightly more frontal shot, but I like the water spray on this so here you go. USM and slight adjustment in PS CS Shadow/Highlights adjustment.

Canon 10D & 500mm IS on Wimberley Head
Metering: Incident -1/3 (to keep the bill from blowing out) for 1/1000 @ f/8
ISO: 200
550 EX Flash comp: -2 (to get detail in the blacks)

Excellent Coot!!!

Image:
Prey? , They are mostly vegetarians, they love the tender shoots of water plants, great exposure on the beak/feathers and excellent detail on the overall, , flying water and open beak is but a bonus!!
Congrats!! 8)

Very well done, you captured the whites and the dark body, plus some action to boot. :!:

Great action, exposure and water color. Can't ask for more than that. :D

Very good exposure with lots of detail on the body.
I also like the raised water.

I also love the water drops! I watched a pair of coots raising their chicks this past summer and was amazed to see how voraciously they attacked their food. You've captured that behavior extremely well here. :)

This is such a cool shot - I've seen them do this, and one day I watched one do it with a dead fish! Alas, not any great images of the behavior for me like this one.

Fine shot, Wayne. I see coots eating greens like this frequently.

Super action image, Wayne !!! I saw the identical behavior a few days ago at Merritt Island ... and am delighted to see it 'recorded' so vividly in this capture!!! Teeny nit is I'd prefer bottom border to be equal. :D :D

Wayne, I think I got the exact same shot, although I did not use flash, yours really helped the water splashes stand out, unlike mine. Nice one.

Nice one! I do wish the bird had faced you a bit more but fine as is. The seaweed adds a lot.
