Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis)

I was in Austin visiting and had a chance to try my
luck again on Town Lake. The Scaups are heavy there
and very approachable. This girl flew across the lake
looking for a snack and I was able to catch her as she
came in. I can't decide if I would have liked a
little splash for action, but I thought this was still
pretty cool. Just her tail is touching at this point.
All comments welcome.

Wayne, the antisapated landing is awesome. Great timing.

The lack of splash creates a great tension and anticipation. Definitely a cool shot.

I agree with what Neil said about the tension. I think while a splash would have been cool, I the image wouldn't be as powerful as the anticipation of the splash.

Very sweet shot

You did a great job of capturing this just before the moment of contact. Very well done, Wayne.

Enjoyed meeting and shooting with you this weekend.

Great action shot. How do you get so close to these birds? only a 400mm is fantastic!

You're right...a little splashing would've been better, but this is still a great shot none the less. Well done.

The "Decisive Moment" is nearly perfect, IMHO. The tail is barely touching and the feet have a nice amount of air between them and the water.

Very, very cool. 8)

Nice action shot! Looks like pretty tough light. I hope you got some of the actual landing with those feet spraying water.

Very nice shot of this female - I love the tail being in the water already.

This was actually shot at 12:10 pm. I just had to be careful about my position relative to the sun and by watching their behavior for a few minutes prior to settling on a spot. Just goes to show that the opportunities don't always disappear at lunch time.
