(Northern Pintails) Bosque de Apache, New Mexico

This is intended to be about a month long series of images from my two weeks at Bosque. My intent is to make the images flow as though they all occurred during a single day. Of course, they occurred during the two weeks I was there. :)

This is the nineteenth post of the series. The time is now 7:46 am.

Activity at the crane pools has been hopping since sunrise at 7 am. There are an almost constant stream of SHC's taking off. If there was a small flock of snow geese, those have left in spectacular fashion along with various smaller groups of ducks. This is one of those groups.

I had been going for wing blurs immediately prior to taking this and when this flock flew by, I snapped a few frames. In hind sight, that was a good decision. The net effect was an increased DOF and movement in the wings.

Tripod/Wimberly mounted Nikon D2H, 600mm AFS, TC-14EII, ISO 200, Manual , 1/125 @ F14. Cropped about 20% off the length and made into a panorama.

Very neat shot. I like the perfect shape of the ducks seen from directly abeam them. In a perfect world, I'd rather see the center of mass, so to speak, on the half of the image from which the movement is coming. But you take what you can! Definitely a nice shot in any case!

Nice one. I don't have any pintails in flight, so I'd be happy to have this. With the female included, it might even work to illustrate courtship flight. It would be more marketable, and I think stronger, with less wing blur.

Good panning technique, great missing man formation if you ask me!! Great DOF, A higher SS would have been nice as well but at the expense of DOF, Very nice, Tony!!
I like it !! 8)

Tony, this is great. I also see another great comp by removing the left bird and cropping from the left. Great work.

Outstanding, Tony. I kind of like the composition the way it is with the trailing guy.

Great group flight shot!! I was thinking the same as Alan on the composition but I would take this, as is, in a heartbeat. :D

Nice shot! The guy trailing the main group balances the image nicely. While I saw Pintails at Bosque I never saw any flying like this. Good catch.

Pretty cool shot. The wing blur works well because the heads are sharp.

Really nice shot. It's interesting how the female seems to be exerting less effort to keep up with th "boys" :) or at least that's the impression the different wings blurs give.

You really did a good job pulling off this tough shot! Well done indeed!

This is some series...

Ok, so this is shot #19 and it's 7:46am. At this rate you'll have roughly 130 shots to make it through a full day. That's 111 shots left at 1 post per 48hrs means you'll be done some time in August.

I can handle Bosque all year long, sounds like fun!

That was an enjoyable technique I learned whose results are very pleasing. I like the crop as is -- it give the feel that one is left out and desperatley trying to get back in form with the others.

Yea, but I can only post one bird image every two days. And there are so many cute images. It's going to be another week before I get to 8 am. But by 9 am, I get to post a few in the wildlife gallery. I know they are waiting for that. :D

Nice composition, Anthony!
The wing motion adds a sense of realism.

Good work.
