According to the reference I have, a porpoising Adelie does 15 mph. It seemed much faster--I'm guessing it took a good bit of a 70 hp Yamaha to stay with the bird. Getting groups is relatively easy, but one bird in the frame was hard as they're submerged I'd guess three to five seconds for every half second they're above water. There's no sign where they will come up, and you'd need to shoot before they break the surface to catch them in the air. I only had one opportunity like this (i.e., Zodiac matching the speed of a fairly close, parallel-tracking bird, and this was easily the best of the lot, though not what I wanted. Weddell Sea off Paulet Island, Antarctic Peninsula, EOS-3, 400 DO, 1.4x II, 1/1500, f5.6 (evaluative @ 0, same as white +1 1/2), Provia at 100 and unpushed, slight crop from left and top.

This is a cool shot, I think the timing is great. The distinct feet and splash really add to the image for me. I also enjoy the creativity of it.

It may not be what you hoped for but it's still a fine shot. Easy to tell it's a penguin diving and the colors are great. I like it!

Wonderful shot, Cliff. Your framing is innovative. Mine wouldn't have been nearly as good.

Very cool image. Hard work pays off sometimes even though you don't always get what you envision beforehand. Many would not even try this kind of shot. Great work.

A crap shoot at best!!, And this is very nice indeed!!
It is still amazing to me how these flightless birds survive and thrive in such a hostile environment!!!

This one is incredible. The smooth flow into the water and frozen splash from behind is just perfect.....and you were shooting film.
