Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao)
(captive)

I don't typically shoot captive birds. But, as precious rain forest acreage vanishes at an alarming rate and poaching still a problem, for a Texas boy, one of the few places you can reliably find and photograph these wonderful creatures is a zoo or sanctuary. This cute character is a resident at a rain forest exhibit outside of Houston and proved to be very much a ham for the camera.

The trick with DOF was to wait until she turned her head more on plane with the body, which also made for a more pleasing comp.

Love the pose, detail and sharpness, Wayne!
A pleasing shot indeed.

Do you have one that include the tail as well? I'm debating ... :?

Nice shot Wayne. I would crop it above the perch without the feet.

A super shot, Wayne. Great exposure, BG and pose.
I would like to see the tail, but feel it works well as presented.
