Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao)
(captive) I don't typically shoot captive birds. But, as precious rain forest acreage vanishes at an alarming rate and poaching still a problem, for a Texas boy, one of the few places you can reliably find and photograph these wonderful creatures is a zoo or sanctuary. This cute character is a resident at a rain forest exhibit outside of Houston and proved to be very much a ham for the camera. The trick with DOF was to wait until she turned her head more on plane with the body, which also made for a more pleasing comp.
