SE Arizona

1D MK II, 300 f/2.8 w/1.4X TC, f/22, 1/250 sec, ISO 200, 5 flashes set manually

I'm relatively new to the stop-wing hummer shots but it's very addicting once you start and I'm lucky to have a yard full of Anna's Hummers on which to practice . Most of the Broad-bill's we saw two weeks ago had pretty worn plumage--this was one of the better specimens.

Great shot Steve! The background is the perfect shade of green, but then you already know that. ;) Good times...:)

These are beautiful little hummers and the BG is perfect. So now I need three more flashes? This site is going to be the death of my budget!

KK, you want to underexpose the ambient light as much as possible so almost all the lighting comes from the flashes. You can't do it with shutter speed when synched at the camera's top end, 1/250 second, which isn't near enough to freeze a hummingbirds wings. A low ISO helps but it isn't enough. In this shot I used four flashes on the hummingbird and two on the background. If you have too much ambient light in conjuction with the flashes you in effect get a double exposure or ghosting. Sometime it can look cool as in Juan's post from a couple of days ago. In Arizona this was a real problem since it was tough to find shade so I got a lot of ghosted images. In addition, a highly stopped down aperature adds to the depth of field so you get birds in focus from head to toe.
