Rufous Whistler

Canon 10D, 300 mm f/2.8, 2x, f/6.7 1/350 sec., ISO-400
9/22/2003.

Taken in the MacDonnell Range, near Alice Springs in the center of Australia. I fell in love with this picture when I first saw it. I like the backlight on the bird.

Strictly speaking, this is a spring photo instead of a fall photo, since it is spring in Australia. The colors make it fall, however.

This bird has an interesting song, with a really strong flute like whistle.

Any comments and suggestions are welcome.

It is not necessery to get very close to bird to get great climat. You did it very, very well!

A very nice shot. I do wish there was a little bit more light on the bird's face and that his head wasn't turned away so much but still overall a nice shot!

Chandler. I too would like to see him with his head turned towards the camera, also I wish the big OOF light colored branch was not in the BG. The smooth BG is very sweet. Wish we could hear him sing :)

I love the backlighting. The looking away pose works for me but would work better without the bright branch in the background.

Overall a very nice, peaceful image. :)

Wonderful bird and great rim lighting to boot, a slight head turn into the film plane, a little more light on his face and the absence of the OOF branches in the BG would have been great, still very nice as is!!
Congrats!! 8)

Forget about the film plane. Why should the bird be parallel to it anyway? The bird's pose is wonderful. Great shot, a very pleasing color palette. Nice composition. Congrats!

I really love the smooth part of the background here. I think the bird looking away in this photo adds to it's overall mood- as if you just happened upon he scene. Very nice IMO.

A pretty little guy in nice lighting. Your sensor looks like it needs cleaning. There's a bit of a spot top center.

Thanks for pointing this out. I have not cleaned the sensor since I got the camera. I did find some dust on the rear element of the doubler. I wonder if that could be the problem.
Thanks.
