I just took this image a couple of hours ago. It was one of those times when everything went as planned. I've had this image in my head for a long time but had not been able to pull it off till now. I hiked up a local ridge this morning knowing the colors on the next ridge were looking good and that there were several redtails hanging around. I really didn't care what raptor I got in this image as long as I got one. There was no wind so very few migrants so I figured the birds were more likely to fly along the ridge and not as high as there was no added lift from the winds hitting the cliff face and providing an updraft. I was there 3 hours and was just about to leave when this bird and a juvenile redtail came floating along and stayed low enough so that they were against the fall foliage on the far ridge! I have zillions of shots of redtails agianst the sky but this is now one of my all time favorites!! I love it when things go as planned :D .

Canon 1D, 300 f2.8, ISO 250, Manual focus as even with only one sensor selected the camera would focus on the far hillside.

Jim, This rocks! What a bird and what a BG. The exposue and detail on the bird is awesome. The BG is just the right amount of bluring. Excellent work. Nothing is more fullfilling than having a shot in mind and then getting it.

Jim,

I like your modesty as much as I like this image and I love this image. :D

Your knowledge of these birds is what made everything go as planned. Beautiful fall foliage with a gorgeous bird for the finishing touch.

Excellent in every way!!

Jim,

Great capture. The BG colors are muted some, but the hawk ready stands out. Manual focus no less.

Wow!

On top of everything else, you got a very fine specimen looking huge, powerful, and very comfortable at the top of the food chain.

A terrific image! Love the wing position and especially the fanned tail feathers and the catchlight in the eye. Lovely!

I had this same background when I was at the fish hatchery and thought the same thing. Problem was....the hawks wouldn't fly low. I'm sure glad that someone got this shot. This is exceptional.

Jim,

Great shot. The fall colors are wonderful. It's nice to see the top side of the hawk, especially the red tail. The position of the head is ideal.

Excellent pose and background. One of the best Red-tailed Hawk pictures that I have seen.
