I watched this Owl hunt for a while it would land on the ground after listening from a tree when it spotted me and my tripod it thought my flash would make a good perch. Unfortunately when I let go of the camera it wasn't locked down and it flew away so I didn't get the shot. This image was just before it landed on the flash.

Canon 1Dmk2 500mm f4, Tripod, Manual exposure incident meter 1/500 @ f4 Iso 400, Auto focus.

whoa! I wonder what the deal is with its eye. Was it like that the whole time? Some sort of injury?

Jim,

I always wondered how you got the nickname "bird magnet".

Quasimodo Owl for sure. I think is a testiment to their hearing that this guy could survive with an eye like that.

Nice image.

Incredible capture James, very well done. I had one fly toward me 3 weeks ago, I shot off 9 frames, not one was in focus. The 1DM2 couldn't keep up with focusing.
