White Pelican - Chandler, Arizona
EOS 20D, 500mm, 1.4x, 1/20 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400

This is a shot from a series in the Photo Essays Forum but people have liked it so I thought I'd post it here to give it a bit more exposure. We have had a white Pelican invasion at the man-made waterways just down the street from my house so this is an Almost Motif :) shot. This shot was taken several minutes before sunrise when the pink early morning sky was reflected off of the calm water. The shutter speed was extremely slow but fortunately it was dead calm and the shot is very sharp.

I can see why they like it so much. The image has a very relaxing feel to it.

love the colors with this pelican. I still can't get used to seeing pelicans in Arizona.....I guess they're feeding on minnows in the lakes?

EJ:

Beautiful bird and background, a little flat on my monitor, I took the liberty of giving a little "S" treament in curves, looks more "punchy" to me , what do you think ?

Nah, the lakes are stocked with big fish! Yesterday I was looking out the window at work and a flock of about 50 birds flew right over the building.

Juan, I purposely didn't do that because I wanted to preserve the pastely nature of the predawn light and light fog on the water.

Everything about the Pelican is perfect but the water color puts it over the top.

Very serene, I don't care for the punched-up version, original works nice.

Same picture, processed 2 different ways. I guess some will like your method and others the one with more'punch'. We could all be happy with the raw file on our hard drives!!!!

These types of shots are very difficult for me exposure-wise. Very nice work. You nailed it.

MMMMM, I loved it in your photo essays post, and still do. One of the most beautiful pelican images I have seen.

Beautiful shot E.J. as usual.

The low angle works really well, and the soft colours give it a tranquil feel. Looks sharp as a tack as well.

Great stuff.

All the best, Gearoid
