Fort DeSoto late evening sun in August.
D70 Nikon, 600mm lens, ISO 200, F/4.5 at 1/400

I was wading across a channel when a reddish egret landed near me and then another egret landed near him. He pulled back his head and I snapped this shot. I had just purchased the 600mm lens and was carrying it on a Gitzo 1548. I wasn't accustomed to the rig and was creating a huge blood blister on the palm of my left hand while I was taking this shot. One of the legs of the tripod had slipped between the other two legs and as I tried to straighten everything while getting this shot I caught the skin of my hand in the hinge.

Sorry the bird doesn't have breeding plumage. I have hundreds of others that do have those spectacular colors however and I'll post some of those in the future.

Thanks for looking,

Van

Love the composition, light, and fluffed up bird! I think even the non-breeding Reddish Egrets are stunning. I think this would be strengthened by the bird's head being more parallel with the film plane. You did well with the dark, smooth background here, I like it.

Sorry to hear about your hand. You came away with a nice shot. The raised head feathers and neck curve are wonderful.

Ouch

Still I reckon it was worth it for this. Great graphic quality, very striking.

The slight head angle has already been mentioned.

HI Van, I enjoyed the story of your getting your hand stuck iunder the tripod leg tab. If you really would like to have some fun, try getting the skin of your neck caught there!

Best, artie

Artie,
That does sound like fun. I'm going to save it though as a surprise to myself when I least expect it.

This is an incredibly animated expression you got. Love those raised feathers and the light on them. Good work. 8)
