11:00 AM Cozad Ranch, South Texas.

When I visited the Cozad Ranch at Linn, Texas. The ranch workers left a stale carcass of a Javelina (kind of wild pig) in front of the blind, needless to say the smell was not particularly nice. The Caracara knew I was on the blind and comfortably allowed me to take full frame and flying shots from the perch she was using, but she was afraid to come closer for a head shot and to eat the untouched "succulent meal".

It became a power struggle, if I leave the blind, she will come and finish the carcass but if I stay she then will need get too close of a potential harmful human. At 11:00 AM we both were tired of interchanging looks and the light was really harsh, but then the hydrochloric acid of the stomach of the Caracara was a more powerful stimulus that the lactic acid of the tired muscles of my butt and she came to gorge herself like a child on a ice cream parlor.

This is the result, I hope you like it.

Cool head shot Juan and great background. Good thing cameras only capture sight and not smell.

Worth the wait, Juan. Good story and good image to go with it. Although the eye is centred the colour of the beak with blood makes this a good composition. You handled the high light well too.

Great work Juan. Too bad you couldn't have brought a dummy person with you, so they could leave the blind.

Juan,

Excellent portrait. Love the way the bird looks against the green background. The blood on the beak adds something special to the image.

Funny story. Glad you waited her out. I like the shadows created by the eyelashes.
