I don't have much in the way of gulls except this one. This was shot last May at Ft. Desoto in the late evening. It was beginning to get overcast and very windy. A few Laughing Gulls were all that was left and this guy hung around. I was sitting out in the water looking toward the shore and he just kept posing. I had the 2X TC on and couldn't take it off for fear of dropping it in the water. I had too much focal length to get him all so I composed with this shot......nearly full frame.

Canon 1DMkII, 500mmL IS, 2X TC, tripod, 550 EX
ISO 200, ss 1/1000, f/14, flash -1
C1 Raw conversion, PSCS: slight crop, USM, levels, etc.

Very nice portrait, Lana. I like the tight composition and the light.

A terrific shot with extreme details showing even with 2x TC.
Exposure control is first rate and the few feathers blowing in the breeze added some interest in the shot too ...
With all that, the grey bg complements well with the subject.
A winner, Lana!

Beauty, Lana. Exposure, comp, detail, colour, tight crop. Everything going for it.

Lana, sharp and beautifully exposed. Love the BG too. I'm not crazy about the blown up feathers, and I might consider a vertical crop of the head and breast. Great detail in the blacks and whites.

Perfect exposure and beautiful color.
I like the feathers blowing in the wind.
The gray background and the nearly monochromatic character with just a touch of color make for an outstanding image.

A nice portrait.
Excellent exposure and I think the raised feathers add interest and appeal.

Great job of controlling the darks and the highlights on this bird, Lana. There is great detail in those feathers too. I haven't decided whether I like the windblown scapulars or not. They look kinda cool in a way. A very nice shot in all other respects though!

Lana:

Nice capture in terms of sharpness and exposure, might work better a tight crop of the head only.

Nice one Lana. Better than any LG shots I have(0). Wish the feathers would have cooperated but that's bird photography as you know. :D

Nice one Lana. Wonderful exposure and light. I think the misplaced feather adds a touch of reality.

I think I'd also like a tighter crop but this is still a great image as is Lana! :D
