I've learned a lot since joining NSN, and I owe it to my chance encounter with Alfred at Anhinga last spring. What I've learned since then is: 1) digital is the way to go with avian subjects; 2) get down low to eye level, even if you get eaten alive by chiggers; 3) use more DOF when ya find a friendly subject who lets you get in close; 4) do your sharpening post Raw conversion; 5) watch your histogram for spikes showing blown out highlights...6) Pay attention to background; and those are just some examples ...

EOS 20D w/Canon 70-200 2.8L USM IS w/1.4x TC w/580Ex
Shutter speed: 1/160 sec
Aperture: 8.0
Exposure mode: Av
Exposure compensation: -2/3
Flash: External E-TTL
Flash exposure compensation: -2/3
Metering mode: Evaluative
ISO: 200

Converted using Adobe Raw 2.4; full frame; processed in photoshop cs.

Hope y'all had a great Xmas....

Pete:

Nice portrait, my only minor nit is being a little too tight on the left. Me too have learned a lot from NSN.

Thanks Mike and I'm the one that owes you for being a part of the NSN family 8) 8) 8)

I like the way you showed more of his beautiful feathers in the portrait !!! Do agree with a bit more room up front !!

...... I am sure your dream would be to have Pancho perched on the Parrothead tree    8)

You've come along way Mike. Your technique is getting better all the time. A little more DOF would help get the body feathers in focus and probably only if you crank the ISO to 400. Keep up the good work.

Any time you get this kind of detail out of portrait of Pancho, you have to be doing many things right. I would agree with having a little more room in front. Very nice shot, Mike.

Lovely duckly. :) Placing the eye on the center vertical line would work well for this subject if given another opportunity.
