I picked *Noir* for this motif because he's really a difficult subject and I know I couldnt have done this picture 3 months ago.
I haven't been here for the whole year, but in the few months that I've been posting, I think I can make quite a list of the lessons learned, sometimes a few at a time ;)
Try and not to burn the whites, keep detail in the blacks, leave room in front of your subject, shoot for non-contrast, non-reflective waters, keep horizon level, subject away from center, get down to eye level if you can, avoid hot spots in BG, and then, very important, don't be afraid to do unconventional crops, use DOF creatively, and above all, HAVE FUN DOING IT!!!!!
(next year i'll have my list on flight shots  )

What I like about this image is the great exposure control on black and the extreme low angle ...
Nicely done indeed!

Thanks for listing all the 'DO's' you've picked up here at NSN!

Perfect use of DOF. I like the details in plumage and dark BG. Very well done.

Excellent Fabiola! One of your best posts and the elements are all there. Black Swans are some of the most tame birds unless in the breeding mode, then they change personality quite a bit I'm told. :)

This could be a syllabus for a course on avian photography.

Nice shot.
