Early morning light at Santee Lakes. Not the most photogenic perch but it could be a lot worse. The exp comp is a bit misleading as I had to add back about 2/3 in PS. I was set up to protect the highlights on a Northern Shoveler when this guy showed up.

Neil, I actually like the perch a lot. A nice pose and light. I wish for a bit more DOF to get the tail sharp. Well done.

I like the perch a lot. The curlyques seem to pick up the curve of the beak and his head. :)

The NM looks great but Alan sent a defective perch.

Wonderful shot, Neil. The perch adds to the composition, IMHO. Congrats.

Much better than most, and it adds a seasonal and (probably) regional message. Great bird and light too. I didn't notice the tail until I read Alan's comment, but he's right again--with a good, plain background, better to spend some of the unneeded shutter speed on a smaller aperture and more DOF.

Neil, your work is high among my favorites on NSN, this doesn't disappoint. My problem with the 500 and 1.4 at point blank range is remembering to stop down as DOF is so minute at these ranges.
Selective sharpening would help that tail, I suspect.

Very nice, especially the head turned pose. The perch works but could be better. :)
