The more look at my male hooded merg. shot, the more I don't like it. So, sorry, but i'm posting this  . I'll be shooting the mergansers tommorow morning, so hopefully I'll get something i'm really happy with then.

Love the warm light and the bug puts it over the top. Great shot Chris.

Sweet shot, Chris. The BG is a bit busy. I'd consider cropping from the top to put the branch in the ULC, then crop a balanced amount from the right.

Chris,

This is very nice. I like the beautiful light and the colors in the background. I would also consider taking a little off of the top.

I agree about the crop, but this is already a bit of a crop, and it doesn't hold up so well.

Sandy, do you seriously think this is busy? :?: :?

Good work here Chris -- good luck tomorrow with the Mergansers. I'll be out there when my cameras are back from service.

I'm with Sandy on the BG. My eyes are drawn to the bright colors above its head - not to the bird. The light on the bird is sweet though.

Chris:

usually, the brightest portion of a photo grabs the eye. In this case, although the bird is a beauty, the BG above it head draws and keeps my eye focused there. If the whole BG were that color it would be OK. The only thing you can do in these cases is move around a bit when shooting.

Would go with Sandy's crop suggestion if the image can stand it ...
A nice shot, Chris!

Would I kid you, kid (I hate 17-year olds). Chris, this is only my opinion, which is a rather imperfect tool. Actually, toning down the blues also might help draw attention away from the BG.

:x :x  . Thanks for the always honest critiques Sandy, I can count on you to give me the real scoop :) . Although I still like the BG and don't think it distracts, everyone has different preferences, but I'd still like to try out a repost. Do you mean tone down as in desaturate, or darken?

Hi Chris, you just got whipped a tiny bit by lens geometry here. The camera saw something a bit different than you did when you hit the shutter. The bird/perch/bug plane is awesome. You got stuck with some garbage just a bit beyond your control. Not failure----it's life. You did just fine with what the scene offered. The bird is your typically well focused, well exposed, and interesting subject.

Well done Chris! I do think the bright blue sky overpowers the bird a little.

Chris. imagine shooting this with a 500mm lens. Most of the blue bg would not be in the frame and ...

Nice shot.

You're making me work, Chris. Here's a rough repost as I (not necessarily you) see it. I reframed it. Whereas I wanted the branch in the ULC, I couldn't quite get it there. I then darkened AND detaturated the blues, and cleaned up some of the noise and JPEG artifacts resulting from an additional crop. Then I selectively sharpened lost definition in the bird, also resulting from my crop.

BTW, I hate 17-year olds only because if you reversed the numerals in your age, you would still be several years younger than I. When you get to be 18, I won't mind so much.

Nice background and excellent light on this one. I like the way that the branch curves through the frame. The feeding behavior makes this one a super shot.

Nice shot, Chris. Sandy's version works better IMO. I like the bug in the bill and warm light.

Nice one Chris,

I agree with Sandy's crop and like it. You did a nice job with the situation you had, however.

Chris,

I like it as it is. I hope you get bigger glass before long. Can you imagine what you could have done with a 500?

Jim
