This photo is cropped rather severely to vertical. Shot in Bosque del Apache in December from the window of the RV on a beanbag. Canon 10D, Canon 400/2.8 + 2.0 II TC. Technicals not easily available so I'll omit them. Comments, reposts welcome.

Joseph, this is one of those comps wher I think it would be better if you placed the bird near the center. A little Fill flash would help, especially for a catchlight, as the bird is turned away from the light. A great BG and a view of this bird not usualy seen.

Agree with Alan.... besides moving the bid to the center the perch will be out of the corner.

Killer pose and lots of detail.... I like the image very much!!!!

This is a species I see often but never close enough for a photo. I like the back perspective, makes that red head even stand out more. Definitely Bosque colored background! Agree on the comp comments.

I concur with Alan on the critique. Background and pose are great. I've never seen one of these guys so this shot is a treat for me.

Joseph,

Very nice shot. The feather detail, the colors, and the background are all great. Alan gave you some excellent suggestions on how to improve the image.

Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions. I might point out that I used the Shadow/Highlight adjustment in PS CS and I followed Greg Downing's excellent review of this modality in this month's NSN article. Thanks again to Greg for a superb and understandable workflow.
