Barred Owl, Winter Park, Florida

D1x, 600f4, iso 400, f6.3, 1/60 (AP +0), SB800 (+0), full frame, minimal PS adjustments (USM, slight increased saturation).

This was captured two days ago shortly after considering Alex's comments about my last post. Following his advice, I shot a series of images with the SB800 minus the BB. I photographed this owl and its mate, in a park close to my home, in late afternoon under various lighting conditions. All images from my minimum focusing distance to about 30-35 feet (at f4-f6.3, iso 400) were exposed much better without the BB. Comments, critiques and reposts welcome.

Jerry, I'm glad you posted your results without the BB. I have never thought of taking mine off. I'll have to reconsider.

The photo looks great. I might clone out the red in the eyes.

I was taking pictures of a baby barred owl and got "blue eye" also. If you look very closely, you can see the bluish color in their pupils. The flash brings it out unnaturally. I think your picture is really nice but it looks like it would benefit from some additional sharpening.

Hi Jerry,

I love the alert posture here. Other than the red eye issue already mentioned I think this is excellent.

Jerry, a well balanced flash output, as you can see results speak louder than words, the red eye could be avoided by having the flash off camera via a bracket and so will the blue catch-lite, Excellent if you asked me !!
I think with this flash (SB-800 ) the results are very nice and utterly predictable, every single time, the BB introduces IMO a myriad of variables that complicate adversely it's proper function, Well done!!
Wonderful bird, nice colors and great detail, Congrats!!! 8)

Jerry,

Nice Owl! The pose is really cherry.. those legs/talons look like half Owl/Half eagle! That along with the stare make this one stand out. The eyes did get a little freaky, but you can fix that in PS. It's too bad it's all but impossible to get these guys' pretty brown eyes to show up.. they always have the black-hole-eyed look. Sweet pic.

Jerry, I'm delighted with this Barred Owl !!! You've taken a huge leap by learning the flash lesson Alex gave you on your Scrub Jay image. Very fine result !!! 8) 8)

I think you did very well with this one. What few times I've shot owls, I've always had problems with getting their eyes to look the way they should. A little PS should work wonders on this one.
