Canon 1Ds 400 5.6 L Lens at 5.6 1/1250 ISO 400 Tripod, Ball head. Manual Incident Metering BB -2 Cropped ~ 40%

Yesterday morning I was kind of masochist tryng to nail these purple martins in flight, I took more than 500 pictures and end up with a very sore neck and very few keepers. I was using the 400 5,6L with the Ds, although the body was slow in acquiring focus, but when the bird approached the house I have so much information on the sensor that I was able to crop without losing detail.

Juan I can sympathize with you....Friday I was doing the same thing there was a strong wind from my sun angle and decided to give them a try.

I think I nailed one with nesting material but want to check it on my big monitor :D (computer currently down :x )

Great shot everything about those little guys is hard, exposure is dead on, great pose and sharp Congratulations a real keeper

Juan
This is a great shot.....and very difficult to get. All I can say is that you must have too much free time on your hands because it would take me days to get just one of these. Excellent capture!!!

You must have been very patient!!!
I once tried to follow flight of bank swallows with the 400 and a 10D(!!) in Greece and I know what you went through (needless to say I wasn't very succesfull).
This is a wonderful shot IMO.
Congrats.
