Steller's Jay Cyanocitta stelleri
Location: Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park

Taken last November at a picnic ground in RMNP with only a 300mm lens. I know this is a little tight for some people's taste especially on the bottom. I was standing on a picnic table in order to reduce the shooting angle on these birds. If I would have even moved back 1/4 inch I would have fallen off the table.

Not the greatest shot in the world but it fits the Motif Theme. :D

10D, 300/4 IS, Eval @ -1/3, Av @ f7.1, SS 1/400, ISO 200
Handheld
Slight crop off the right hand side.

Comments and critiques are always welcome. Thanks for looking. :)

I love these Jays and I think this is a nice image. Yeah a bit more room at the bottom would've been nice but not at the risk of breaking your neck! There's a lot of detail in the dark area which I like too. Good motif shot!

Very nice shot of one of my very favorite mountain region birds. A bit more room on bottom would have been nice :)

Good one Bill, DOF ample in spite of bird's position.

sweet shot, you certainly captured the mischievious look, common to jays.

Someone has messed up with paint :D Wonderful shot. Needles make beautiful pattern to background.

The pattern on the feathering is a nice spectacul; it stands out better because the bird is tight in the frame. The irony here is this just may be a better choice of framing for this species.

A sweet image, Bill. I usually do not give my secrets away, but I would have gotton more room below by jumping backward off the table while focusing on the eye and recomposing while falling. Give it a try, Bill, but have an ambulance waiting.

When I can stop laughing at the thought of you dancing on the table!! and then Sandy's hilarious description of photographic technique!!......... I can say that this is a lovely shot Bill! You have captured the character of this cheeky bird and presented his colours most beautifully.

Very nice!

I guess you're not an aspiring NBA player since you didn't try the fade away jumper shot off the picnic table.....

Hi Bill,

Super sweet image here. Love these birds, even though I've never seen one. Despite a trip thru Teton's, Yellowstone and Glacier....I did find a rarity at Glacier though, a Blue Jay! Cripes!

BTW: I'll trade you a non breeding Am Avocet for one of your copulating Avocet image....

I've never seen one, your image has a lot. The colours are very well reproduced with good head angle and detail.

Bill,

This is an excellent shot. The pose and the colors more than make up for the tightness on the bottom. Excellent work.
