While in New Mexico I tried an experiment to get some better flight shots. My 500 f/4 is a manual focus lens but I have an old TC-16A that converts manual focus lenses into an AF lens. One afternoon at the farm deck I tried it out and was rewarded with several interesting keepers. There is vignetting because this TC was designed for shorter lenses and I had to manually focus the lens to get it in the ballpark of my subject before slightly depressing the shutter to get the TC to lock on to the subject. Well it works as long as you don't mind shooting at 800mm (it is a 1.6x TC) and cropping the image to get rid of the dark corners. Not something I will use very frequently, but this TC can help me get images I couldn't get before until I save enough beans for an AF 500 f/4. Cropped about 25%. It's good to be back on NSN after a few weeks of too much work and some Christmas fun.

Nice wing position and placement in the frame. The shadows are a bit distracting but not a major nit.

Mike,

This is a really nice shot!! Th AF technique you described is a new one on me...I've never heard of it. Actually, the shadows don't bother me because there's good detail in them.

Mike,

This works because the head is sharp. Neat capture.

This is a great shot. What really is interesting is the technique you used....good thinking, it sure worked.

Mike,

Nice work. I like the wing position and the way the light hits the face.

Nice work Mike. I like the wings position and how the face and eye is surrounded by the shadow. Your technique sounds like a lot of effort, but you gotta do what you gotta do....and it apparently works :D
