I found this guy near Port Aransas, TX recently. I don't see many of them so it's always a treat to get a shot of one.

1DII with 500 and 1.4X TC, manual metering (ISO 400, 1/1,000, f8). Cropped about 10% from original.

Thanks for looking. All comments and critiques appreciated.

Bruce this is great. I'm not a huge fan of the high key-ish background but the bird is awesome and especially the fact that you got this with a bittern makes it even better! Check out those long toenails! :D

Great stuff Bruce. Tough bird to catch, never mind in flight.

Bruce,

Excellent flight shot. I like the wing position.

First Bittern in flight shot I have ever seen. Love the mucky feet.

Bruce -

Don't know what these birds are like in TX, but up here they are very secretive and hard to get at all. This is a great catch for you!

Yeah, any shot of a bittern without 98% of the frame covered in reeds is a good catch. But a clean flight shot is _really_ cool. I do wish the BG had some color to it as I feel the grey washes out the bird somewhat. But the bird itself is great and I like the composition. Just my imagination, but the bittern looks a bit surprised to have been caught out. :) Very nice to see!

Dang, Bruce. No wonder I can't get any Bittern shots.....I keep looking for them buried in the reeds. Maybe I need to look up once in awhile. Super shot of a bird that I don't think I've ever seen fly!!
